James Harrison was recognized by the Salt River Schools Education Board in August. Here is what his advisor Kenisha Begay had to say about him:
James first became a Higher Education Scholar in 2003, when he attended Scottsdale Community College with the goal of completing a general studies transfer degree. At the time, he was still exploring his academic and career goals and wasn’t quite sure what he wanted his future to look like. He simply knew he wanted to give college a chance. As he got further into his Associates Degree program, he realized that he liked learning about people, society, and the different experience everyone has. This interest led him to transfer to Arizona State University, where he pursued a double major in Sociology and African American Studies.
As James reflected on his life experiences and personal goals, he recognized a desire to support others navigating their sobriety journeys. Having experienced firsthand the multifaceted journey toward sobriety, James wanted to give others the same encouragement, guidance, and support he once received. All of which has led him to this point in his life. James is currently wrapping up the final year of his master’s degree in Addictions Counseling program at Grand Canyon University.
While balancing school, family, and work can be challenging, especially while working nights, James continues to put his best foot forward. He is powering through a full-time graduate program while maintaining a 3.9 GPA. James has also been working at Journey to Recovery (JTR) as a Behavioral Health Technician where he plays an essential role as part of the treatment team. What began as a desire to simply earn a degree has grown into something much more meaningful. In his own words James says, “This is the only place I want to be – helping others in the Community.” The dedication and passion James has is truly inspiring. We are incredibly proud of all that he has accomplished and what is next to come. We Thank you for letting us be part of your journey, James.
